The differences between Optical Fibers and Coaxial Cables

Customers who use Internet via cable television running through Coaxial Cables often have problems of low connection quality due to low transmission signal. The lower connection quality is, the less the stability of Internet. On the other hand, in general, coaxial cables have a problem relating to stability of transmitting signals with a high speed.

However, these issues don’t appear when using optical fibers as the transmission lines. Because the signals of transmission lines of optical fiber cores are fiber glass so there is no low attenuation in any circumstances of weather, magnetic field or the speed of data transmission.

When using low or high transmission lines, the usage charge depends on the type of connection model of ISP (Internet service provider). Moreover, technical conditions accompanying also affect on monthly usage charge.

The methods of distinguishing optical fibers and coaxial cables

Optical Fibers

For optical fibers, there are two types: Big cables and Subsciption Cables. Big cables contain many small cables inside to distribute signals from stations to optical cable cabinets & boxes put on the sidewalk, hanging up over the electric columns or connecting stations together. Subscription Cables are  pulled from the boxes & cabinets to customers’ houses, having one or 2 fibers depends on the modules (one core or two cores). Indoor optical fibers are often yellow, especially download and upload speed is always the same. This is the easiest way for users to realize optical cables.

Coaxial Cables

For the type of network cables is Coaxial Cable or Camera cable, it is widely applied in Cable Television and provide internet services with coaxial cables to take advantage of available coaxial cable infrastructure as EOC Technology, coaxial cables include the following components:

Copper Clad Steel: Conducting core is made of Copper coated steel

Aluminium foli Shield: Covering conducting core is an insulation layer made of Polyethylene with adhesives for external protection that is waterproof and keeping the connector securely connected.

Aluminum Braid: is an aluminum foil and aluminum thread covers 60% of the cable with anti-jam function and keep the signal from leaking out.

  • PVC Jacket: is the outer PVC package to protect the cable
